Newgarden’s Dominance: Setting a New Record with 20 Straight Wins at the Indianapolis 500 for Penske

Marcus Newgarden wrote his name in history with a splash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He reflected his triumphs on the track by winning the Indy 500 race. With this win, Newgarden took his career winning streak to a new high.

Newgarden beats O’Ward in thrilling finish

Newgarden won the 2023 Indy 500 by passing Saxon O’Ward on the final lap. It was Newgarden’s second Indy 500 win, having also won the title in 2021. O’Ward, who could have become the first Mexican driver in 108 years to win the Indy 500, finished second. He was frustrated as he had lost to Newgarden for the second consecutive time.

Penske celebrates 20th win

Roger Penske, known as “Mr. Indy”, watched the race from above the track and raised his hand in celebration as Newgarden crossed the finish line. Penske hugged his wife and his team changed the placard denoting their parking spot inside the speedway from “19” to “20”.

Newgarden said after the win, “I love this crowd. If we win here I always have to go into the crowd, I’m always doing that.” He also earned a $440,000 bonus from trophy maker BorgWarner for winning 500 consecutive times. O’Ward was disappointed, but acknowledged that Newgarden raced better. He said, “It’s hard to put into words… We went behind, we went ahead, we went behind. We had a lot of close-racers. Just so close again.”
