In a significant legal decision on Friday, an eight-member jury ordered Rudy Giuliani, former personal lawyer to Donald Trump, to pay $91 million in damages for defamation. This includes $20 million to each of the victims, with over $16 million for emotional distress and $75 million in punitive damages to be shared among them.

The case was brought by two women, Ms. Freeman and Ms. Moss, who originally sought between $15 million and $43 million. Their lawyer, Michael Gottlieb, emphasized during closing arguments that Giuliani’s dissemination of misinformation had caused them severe emotional distress. The jury agreed, noting the need for a stern financial penalty to send a message against such actions.
Giuliani, who did not testify in his own defense, expressed no regret over his actions and plans to appeal the verdict. He dismissed the fines as “ridiculous” and believed testifying would not have altered the outcome.

Ruby Freeman and Daughter Shay Moss: Rebuilding Their Lives After Defamation Battle
Freeman and Moss recounted their harrowing experiences during the trial, including being forced to flee their homes due to threats from Trump supporters. Freeman vividly described her fear, likening the mob to a lynch mob, and shared how Giuliani’s actions isolated her from friends and forced her into a reclusive life.
Speaking to the press after the verdict, Freeman hinted at potential future lawsuits against other public figures who spread similar lies. “They should be held accountable too,” she stated, adding that while the financial award cannot restore her old life, it is a step towards justice.

This case is one of several legal challenges Giuliani faces. In Georgia, he is accused of making false statements in an election interference case involving Trump. He also faces a $10 million lawsuit for sexual harassment and owes over half a million dollars in federal taxes. Recently, Trump hosted a $100,000-per-plate dinner to raise funds for Giuliani’s legal defense.
Giuliani’s financial woes are not new. His 2018 divorce proceedings revealed extravagant spending, including thousands on cigars and fountain pens, and nearly $300,000 on a mistress.
The verdict marks a significant moment in the ongoing battle against misinformation and highlights the severe consequences for those who spread harmful lies.
